An indication for teeth whitening is the change in teeth colour, which can be external and internal. Two main techniques for vital teeth whitening are at-home whitening and in-office whitening. Each of these techniques has advantages and disadvantages. In-office whitening is usually so rapid that the results are visible even after a single visit. Therefore, patients become more motivated for the second and third visits that are often required to complete the in-office whitening. At-home whitening is a simple technique where a mouthguard is made for the patient to bleach the teeth at home. Best results are achieved when combining in-office with at-home whitening. The three most popular techniques for non-vital tooth whitening are the walking bleach technique, inside/outside whitening, and in-office whitening. It is important to always be aware of the possible complications and risks that are associated with different bleaching techniques. Patients should be informed about the risks of recurrent discoloration.
