Suha koža lica i sindrom suhog okaDry facial skin and dry eye syndrome

The lipid layer of the tear film is responsible for ocular surface lubrication and prevention of tear evaporation. It is mainly secreted by Meibomian glands in the eyelids. Dysfunction of the lipid layer is considered responsible for 93% of all cases of tear film dysfunction. Androgens are known to stimulate secretion from both Meibomian and sebaceous glands. Therefore, it is somewhat surprising that no comparison between secretion of sebum from sebaceous and Meibomian glands has been made, i.e., it has not been explored whether there is any correlation between dry eye and dry skin. In 2001, a study was performed in 200 subjects, of whom 100 had dry eye symptoms and 100 were healthy controls. Among the monitored parameters, the comparison between self-reported facial skin type (dry or oily) and symptoms and signs of dry eye was made. Subjects with dry eye symptoms reported to have significantly drier (less oily) facial skin than subjects with no such symptoms. Also, female subjects reported having significantly drier skin than the male ones. Therefore, it may be justified to assess the dryness of the skin in patients with chronic symptoms of eye irritation and refer them to further ophthalmologic evaluation.
